This week I'm reading in the book of Titus and today I was particularly struck by
Chapter 2 in which Paul commands us to be self-controlled not just once, but four times:
v.1 Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified,
self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.
vv.3-5 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be
self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
v.6 Likewise, urge the younger men to be
self-controlled.
vv.11-12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live
self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age
I study out of the
ESV Study Bible and I like the very blunt note that accompanies this chapter that states, "To forsake godliness is to despise the sacrifice of Christ."
It's easy to see in just those four verses how self-control fits into a godly lifestyle, it's an indicator that we are truly being
transformed into his image and that the
fruits of the Spirit are in us.
